Spring Two – Groovy Greeks

This half term we will be learning all about Ancient Greece. Here are some ideas to get your brain thinking about our project:

When was Ancient Greece?

Who are the 12 gods of Olympus? Which one is your favourite?

Why do you think people say that Greece was democratic?                             

Would you rather have lived in Sparta or Athens? Why?

Can you find any famous Greek myths or stories?

What did the Greeks used to wear? What did they do for their jobs?

    The ancient Greeks were very good Architects,Artists,and much much more. There are also different Ancient Greek cities like Athens (which is the largest populated city in Ancient Greece). In Athens there was also a famous building called the Parthenon. Did you know the Parthenon has been a temple , mosque , church and much more religious and holy places.

    And she was the goddess of marriage and childbirth. Both Zeus and Hera were the children of Cronus and Rhea.Poseidon was the god of the sea. He was Zeus’ brother and son of Cronus and Rhea. Poseidon’s weapon was the three-pronged trident, which was capable of shattering any object or shaking the earth. His wife was Amphitrite. Hestia was Zeus’ sister and the god of hearth. Hestia was Hera’s sister. In ancient Greece, Hestia was the important goddess to women.

    The ancient Greeks used to wear lose and colourful fabrics as it was hot most of the time . Women used to wear something called a ‘chiton’ which was like a dress and men would wear a long peice of fabric or armer when they went for battle .

    King Theseus and the Minotaur

    Each year seven girls and boys would go to the maze were the Minotaur lives (which is called the Labrynth) as a sacrifice. One day a brave young hero called king Theseus went into the maze and fought the Minotaur and killed him.

    the ancient Greeks did jobs like pottery,art and many moor.
    the ancient Greeks invented the Olympics the Olympics in the ancient times were actually in celebration of the mighty king god Zeus and there were no bronze,silver and gold medals only one winner.
    the Olympics back then were different but not that different they did sum of the things that we do know like shot put,running,javelin and long jump but they were more vilont and dangerous one of the most dangerous sports was chariot racing i am realy looking forward to learning more about the Greeks this year.

    The goddess Athena

    Athena was an Ancient Greek god who was a warrior and an inventor. She also created many things like the flute , ships , pottery and much more. She was the daughter of Zeus and also the favourite child of Zeus. It was known that she poped out of his head. The city Athens was named after her and the Parthenon ( which was in Athens ) was dedicated to her.

    Medusa
    Medusa was a mythical creature named a Gorgon. She had snakes for hair and anybody who looked into her eyes
    would be turned to stone. She was once a beautiful women but was turned into a Gorgon as a punishment.

    THE OLYMPICS!
    The Ancient Olympics were very different than they are today. In the ancient Olympics they used to run naked. The ancient Olympics were also more aggressive.
    Only men were aloud to compete in the ancient Olympics. Everybody was aloud to attend except married women.

    My favourite god has to be Poseidon.The reason why is because it would be cool if you could talk to fish and sharks.Also you could create earthquakes and storms if you didn’t like them and if they were on a boat you could just sink their ship. Who is your favourite god/goddess?

    Minotaur
    The Minotaur was a famous and gruesom monster. He had the head of a bull and the body of a man, each year seven girls and seven boys went to the minotaurs maze and got eaten.

    The Chimera

    The Chimera is an Ancient Greek creature that was half goat half lion with a snake as a tale and it could also breathe fire.

    Aphrodite was the goddess of love she was well known for her beauty and she had long blonde hair she wore a light blue. She was definitely the most beautiful out of all the godesses .

    The Greeks were very good and clever at maths but there was one person impiticilar that was amazing at it.He was called Euclid he wrote several books or geography and his ideas of maths are still taught in schools today.

    The Greeks created many things that we still use in our modern society today. They created things like the olympics which were annually held for Zeus (who was the king of the gods and the most important). They also created many more things such as alarm clocks , central heating , mathematics and many more things. They believed that the goddess Athena created things like the flute , pottery , ships and lots more.

    There are actually not 12 Gods of Olympus there are 16 and we don’t know if there are any more . The 16 Gods are Zeus , Hera , Poseidon , Demeter , Athena , Apollo , Artemis , Ares , Aphrodite , Hephaestus , Hermes , Hestia or Dionysus , Demeter , Hades , Hera and Tyche.

    What did the ancient greeks eat ? The ancient greeks grew olives , grapes , figs and wheat and kept goats, for milk and cheese . They ate lots of bread , beans and olives . in the summer monthes they ate fresh fruit but , in the winter they ate dried fruit and food.

    In most of ancient Greece a house was built around an open area courtyard . Houses werebuilt of stone ,wood, and clay bricks . They wrev sturdy and comfartable . Large homes might have several bedrooms a kitchen , a bathing room , a womans sitting area ,a men’s dining room , or two rooms for storage.

    I’ve really enjoyed ancient Greece because I have learnt a lot . The area’s I have enjoyed are democracy and Greek gods.

    Ancient Greece has been one of my most favourite projects in year 5 . I have learnt lots of different things this term like what the Greeks wore , the things the Greeks invented , the olympics , different cities in Greece , Greek gods , famous Ancient Greek buildings , Ancient Greek creatures , Ancient Greek myths and much much more .

    I’ve learned alot of things about Ancient Greece and enjoyed it alot. My favourite thing that I learnt was about what they wore and lots more… The Ancient Greeks were very fascinating to learn about .
    I’m looking forward to our new topic 🙂 which already sound interesting …

    Our new project, space , sounds very interesting and I am excited to learn more about it at school and in my home learning .
