Welcome to Year 6!

This half term we will be learning about Mexico. Have any of you ever visited this country? If you have we would love to hear about your experiences on this page. During the next few weeks, we will be learning about the history and geography of Mexico. What would you like to learn about this country? What do you know already?

Have you ever eaten Mexican food? You could find out more about the diet of the Mexican people or try cooking a Mexican dish.

The Mayan Civilisation

Find out where in the world the Mayan civilization was located.

Research an area of interest such as school, home life, clothing, music or religion. Find information about this chosen area and blog about what you have learnt – remember to do this in your own words.

What was important to the ancient Mayans? Who were the important people in their society?

Research artefacts from the Maya civilization. What do you think each object was used for?

    The capital of Mexico is Mexico City. I wonder if any other countries have a capital city like that?

    Mexico City is built on a lake called Texcoco.
    The city is constantly sinking and has sunk more than nine meters in some areas over the last 100 years.
    Mexico City has had many nicknames in the past including “City of the Palaces”, “City of Hope” and “Capital in Movement”.

    Many foods that originated in Mexico are popular worldwide, including avocadoes, chocolate and pumpkins. Mexico is known for its tequila, which is made from agave cactus that is well suited to the climate of central Mexico. Soda is a very popular drink in Mexico, as the country has a well-developed beverage industry.

    Mexico is a very interesting concept. There are celebrations like the day of the dead , which is a festival in honour of the dead. In ancient Mexico history, there used to be people called the Mayans who built lot’s of the ancient temples in Mexico, and they also created many things. They also had simbles for numbers. For example the number 10 is two lines on top of another.

    Some famous people in Mexico are: Frida Kahlo (a famous artist) and Benito Juarez (a famous Mexican lawyer).

    There are some famous Mexican foods that we eat in England like Tacos, Fajitas, Nachos and Burritos. I particularly like Tacos and Nachos.

    In Mexico, the most spoken is Spanish. did you know that the most popular sport in Mexico is soccer, which we call football. they also celebrate DAY OF THE DEAD, which is were the celebrate the departed. Some of the most famous foods in Mexico are:
    Tacos, Churros, Nocuous and many more.

    The Mayan civilisation was really big and very smart they were really good at doing maths and art.

    I would love to go to Mexico on holiday and learn some things when I am there . The place that I wold love to go in Mexico is Mexico City because it is the capital of Mexico and I think there will be a lot of interesting things to do there. I would also love to see all of the old Mayan buildings and I really enjoy learning about the Mayan civilisation because it is just so interesting.

    There are a lot of Mexican foods that we eat today like tacos, fajitas,Mexican meatballs and avocado. All of these things on that list I have eaten apart drom the Mexican meatballs but I have had normal meatballs . The thing that I always eat for my tea is fajitas and my mum makes them with a little spice to them and I love it .

    The Mayans lived over 1,500 years ago in the rainforest. They lived in little villages in houses made out of poles rapped tightly together and dry mud covering the poles to make it water proof and they made the roofs made up of straw, hay and grass.They also put there dead family members underground under there house. The first people to find the Mayan remains was in 1846.

    This half term I have really enjoyed learning about Mexico and the ancient Mayans.My favorite thing about the Maya is that they could build huge structures only using stone some of these Mayan temples can even be seen today there is ,Uxmal,Chichen-Itza,Lamanai and Tikal. My favorite thing about Mexico is the food because there is such a wide variety of spices and flavors you can get a hot and spicy taco or a not very spicy enchilada.

    Learning about Mexico was really fun! In my home learning and school work I enjoyed learning about different landmarks in Mexico , the ancient Mayan civilisations lifestyles, Mayan numbers , different Mexican artists , Mexican food and much , much more.This was an amazing project and I loved learning about things that I didn’t know before.
