Pupil Coaching at The Oaks

A Coaching approach is used across school on daily basis to support children in understanding their strengths and areas for development in their learning. This is through daily conversations and feedback to learning and may be oral or written. This approach is also used in peer-to-peer responses. Children in Upper Key Stage 2 have weekly formal coaching sessions in small groups led by an adult.

The ethos underpinning Coaching approaches in Upper Key Stage 2 is to support children in taking ownership of their own learning, develop their independence and ensure that they become well equipped for their next step to high school and beyond.

Coaching Sessions

The class is split in to 4 coaching teams with a team leader. The children have a 30-minute coaching session at a set time each week. In their first coaching session, the children are given a Rubric, consisting of different home learning challenges. This starts at bronze and works up to platinum. It is up to the children where on the Rubric they would like to achieve each week. The Rubric changes over the year in response to the children’s needs.

What Happens in Coaching

During the weekly sessions, the team leader goes through what each child has achieved that week from the Rubrix, celebrates any successes and coaches the children on how to progress for the following week. Children within the team also help to coach each other, by giving advice and ideas.

Coaching Expectations

Children are expected be self-motivated to achieve their full potential each week. The team leader will monitor most of the home learning challenges through the online platforms of Century Tech, Spelling Shed and Seesaw. Alternatively, children will need to bring in evidence of their home learning to the coaching session in order to achieve. Each child is given a coaching book that they will use during coaching sessions to reflect on their week and for their home learning.
